TAPATAK OZ HONOUR ROLL 2023
FOR THE SECOND YEAR RUNNING, WE WOULD LIKE TO PRESENT OUR “TEACHER OF THE YEAR” AWARDS.
THIS AWARD GOES TO THE TEACHER OR TEACHERS, WHO HAVE IMPROVED THEIR TEACHING SKILLS AND THE TAPPING IN THEIR DANCE SCHOOL IMMEASURABLY THROUGH CONTINUED ENTHUSIASM, PASSION AND COMMITTMENT TO EXCELLENCE! AND / OR THEY ARE TEACHERS WHO HAVE SHOWN INCREDIBLE DETERMINATION AND RESILIENCE IN DIFFICULT CIRCUMSTANCES!

FIONA SCOTT – Miss Fiona has been a shining light in the Western Australian Tap Dance Community for many years and has recently been invited to teach classes at various tap dance festivals in Australia. Her passion and commitment, to a constant and never-ending upskilling and learning, is what really sets her apart and inspires so many of us in the Tapatak Oz Family.
Fiona has an unwavering dedication to quality tap dance and passing that passion to the next generation. And the way she brings her own style and knowledge to the foundational base of Tapatak Oz is truly remarkable. Fiona has made the programme her own at All That Jazz and developed a unique blend of her style, American influences and the Tapatak Oz base to create her own fabulous “ Fiona Scott Signature Style”, which is breathtaking and beautiful! A strong tap department in any dance school, relies on a respect and commitment to tap, that comes from the top and trickles down into the dance studio. And that is what Fiona represents wholeheartedly.

BRIELLE DE THOMASIS – Miss Brielle has the enthusiasm of youth and fun attitude, coupled with an old school “no nonsense” approach which is what leads to her amazing results year on year. She is one of those remarkable younger teachers, with a thirst for knowledge and a commitment to listening, learning, and developing her own teaching skills, on a continual basis. Not only is Brielle a highly skilled and rhythmical tap dancer in her own right, but she demonstrates a genuine desire to dig out what it takes to connect with each student and bring their best attributes to light. And this is what allows every tap student at Dance Express Mackay to be the best tap dancer they can be, should they choose to follow the guidance offered to them. Brielle’s mother, Miss Bishop, principal of DE, has also been a formidable force with the younger tap students and demonstrated that old school tenacity and drive that gets results. From the ground up, the Tap Team at DE get results, because they truly care about the students and encourage them from a young age to be creative and confident in themselves, which exemplifies the Tapatak Oz ethos. We are so proud to have them with us on our tapping adventures.

So – 2023 has been a great year for our wonderful Tapatak Oz community, with many schools back on board with their examinations and a few new schools getting going too, which has been great.
To see the students smiling, thriving, and enjoying the interaction of classes back in the classroom has made a huge difference to their enjoyment of dance in general and tap!

LIBBY KENNEDY – Libby [ Mrs Kennedy ] has shown incredible determination, commitment and creativity in keeping her tap department alive and thriving during lockdowns. She has been with Tapatak Oz for over 15 years and through her openness and willingness to embrace both Tapatak Oz and the professional world of tap, she has single handedly transformed the tap at The Guild into a modern and passionate affair! Her tenacity and determination over the past few years has been incredible and has seen her bring some extraordinarily fun and creative tap opportunities to her students. Filming their tapping with the use of drones in some stunning locations being one of her feats.
Tapatak Oz salutes you Mrs Kennedy!
What a gift you are to your tap students. Passion and enthusiasm come from the top down and you have it in spades!

KATE GRAZIOLI – Miss Kate has had many challenges over the years with a succession of tap teachers leaving the studio to pursue other dance opportunities as performers and/or travelling overseas. Despite this incredible challenge, Miss Kate has carried on and has attended every Tapatak Oz January Teacher’s Conference with a willingness to learn and grow her own abilities. From this drive she has improved her own tapping and confidence so much, that she has been able to take over the teaching of the tap in her school herself when required. This transformation has been amazing to watch and I am thrilled that Miss Kate now has that self- belief and confidence to teach the tap programme at Coastal Dance herself ,should she need to, even though she considers herself a classical ballet teacher and Studio Principal first and foremost. BRAVO Miss Kate – your commitment and perseverance through some difficult times has been incredible and has paid off.
Once again 2022 has been an extremely challenging year for dance schools all over Australia and beyond. But once again our wonderful Tapatak Oz community has risen to the challenge and done what they can to get back to exams.
From listening to the children in Tap Chat, the value of the examination process from preparation to presentation,has become clear and ever present and that is why I encourage all our studios to get back to exams as soon as they can.
The children shared with me so much through Tap Chat over the past few years.
Whilst parents seem to now perceive exams as “ stressful “ the students themselves seem to have realized the huge value, on a personal level, of reaching for and attaining these goals.
They missed having goals to reach.
They missed the camaraderie of their classes and working to reach these goals.
They missed the meaningful feedback from teachers in the classroom and recognized how much less they could understand and achieve when not in a live, in person classroom setting.
They shared their disappointments at not being able to attend eisteddfods and competitions and showcase the skills and routines they had learned.
They shared the distress of having their end of year concerts disrupted and cancelled.
In short – they shared so much about the intrinsic value they recognized in attending their dance classes and all the other “ extra socialization and development” that comes with it.
So to all the Tapatak Oz teachers out there, who despite it all, encouraged and facilitated this continued investment in the exam process and eisteddfods and concerts and all the other things that go with running a dance school.
Thank you so much.
What you do means the world and can often be unseen.
What you bring to the lives of your students can often be hidden and lie beneath the surface.
It is a huge gift you give to your studio community and brings such connectivity and community to all who are there.
So from me to you – thank you so much for all you do.

Tapatak Oz Honour Roll 2021
Once again 2021 has been an extremely challenging year for dance schools all over Australia and beyond. But once again our wonderful Tapatak Oz community has risen to the challenge and done what they can to get back to exams.
So bravo to all!
It is a huge gift to provide the continued opportunity for students to reach their goals and enjoy the sense of accomplishment that comes with preparing for and performing an exam. And what we learned during Tap Chat this year is that the students have really appreciated the effort put in by their teachers to make it all possible!
For those studios still struggling just to get by, and for those studios who have not been able to restart exams – please know that the Tapatak Oz Community is here for you and that we are supporting you from afar!

With many studios unable to participate in examinations this year our Tapatak Oz Honour Roll for 2020 is not quite as long this year.
However – each recipient of an award this year did an absolutely stellar job in maintaining their standard and / or achieving new heights in their tapping in 2020 despite some very challenging conditions.
